With the current changing conditions on the mountain - one minute blue sky, the next heavy snowfall, you need to take more with you to ensure that you can last the day on the mountain. However many of the ski jackets on the market at the moment are more fitted and lack in pockets and suitable storage space for that extra layer, goggles, hat, food, etc! And if you've got children with you then even more added extras are needed!
Time for a well thought out ski backpack. So what should you consider?
- Waterproof: both the material and the zips
- Lightweight
- Comfortable: look for padded back panels and pre-curved hip belts
- Pockets: depending on your preference for lots of compartments or one main one
- Ease of access: when you have ski gloves on you don't want to be fiddling for long - strong easy zipper pulls
- Ski carry straps
- Helmet attachment buckle
- Adapters to mount your water bottle
You can get as technical as you like - for those of you hitting the back country added features such as avalanche equipment pockets, ice pick holders, the list goes on!
But the investment will be one that you'll thank yourself for.
